August News

August 2010

Welcome one and all to our latest news page.

Hello everyone.
We hope that summer is treating you well and that you have had the opportunity to get out and about either at home or abroad.

We were in Denmark for the end of July and beginning of August participating in the KFUM scouts Jamboree at Skive – SEE 20:10 where we camped with approx 16,000 other scouts from a variety of countries. It showed up how well the family of scouting works across the globe and indeed in the streets of Copenhagen after the camp many scouts were meeting and greeting each other.

Products on test during the camp included: Light My Fire Meal Kits which are still at the reduced price of £12 but not for much longer so hurry. DD Hammock silk liner (£18) which was ideal for a good nights sleep when it was too hot for a sleeping bag. Vango Nitestar 250XC sleeping bag was just the ticket for the summer nights under canvas when it cooled down a bit. Vango pillow was instrumental in a braw nights sleep and at the currently reduced price of £4.50 is the best four and a half quid you could spend. Vango Sherpa 70+10 rucsac swallowed copious amounts of kit and was comfortable to carry. Sea to Summit dry bags came in handy for carrying about small items when clipped to a belt and also very good for sealing the dirty laundry away which is a camping essential in my book, just need to pluck up the courage to open it up again and face the dirty washing!!!

Coming up soon:
The Scottish National Explorer Activity Challenge , ‘Explore! Explore! Explore!’ at Fordell Firs is due a visit from us. Why, I hear you ask? Well we are sponsoring the prizes for the winning team and we are looking forward to being a part of the weekend.

What about Spikey?

Well Spikey came on tour with us to Denmark and had a fantastic time seeing all the sights and meeting new people. He looks a bit sad to be back at home after his travels but is settling back into life in the Den. Thank you to all the people that helped make Spikey’s holiday a great time.

July’s News

The spell of recent good weather has prompted us to put aside the four and five season sleeping bags and whip out the two season sleeping bags, though the poncho’s are still available!!!

We have available the two season Gelert Pioneer 1000 which weighs in at 1kg. It normally retails for £25.00 however we are currently retailing it at £15 which is a crazy price!!

Vango is also well represented on our stock list with the comfortable Nitestar 250 available for £30.00

If you have broad shoulders or a protruding chest then perhaps the Nitestar 250XC at £35.00 is for you. It is wider across the chest to allow a bit more comfort if you need it. After using one himself, Akela can recommend this bag. It was one of the most comfortable night’s sleep at camp so far.

If you plan on doing some serious hiking then look no further that the Vango Ultralite 200 £55.00 which combines all the quality you would expect from Vango in a lightweight and compact package.

Talking of lightweight hikes -

Keep your energy up with Wayfarer food. We picky eaters have tried it and would recommend it as delicious. If we were to say boil in the bag food it conjures up pictures of tasteless convenience food, so when we say you boil the food in the sealed foil bag and it is delicious and nutritious then you better be prepared for how nice it is.

You boil in the foil…… so that there is limited risk of contaminating the food if the water is slightly tainted or if you have used water purification tablets and don’t like the aftertaste or are allergic to any of the chemicals used.

Now the bit you want to know – main meals, breakfasts etc cost £4.00 and desserts cost £3.50.

That takes us neatly –

Into Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition territory and all the lovely pieces of essential equipment we have in stock. From Bridgedale socks & liners to tents & storm shelters.

Somewhere in between all that we can supply everything you will need to pack in your rucsac, including the rucsac!!

Don’t bypass us thinking we are expensive, all our price checking has shown we are very competitive and in many cases we are cheaper than many of the big chains.

Camping is great fun.

We have had our own Cubs at camp where they learn more about looking after themselves and each other and of course teamwork. The tracking activity went down really well and so did the sing-a-long at the evening campfire.

A good time was had by all and I am sure the perfect weather played its part.

Please ensure that when you are out in the heat that you drink plenty water, keep your head shaded and apply plenty sun cream. Also exercise extra caution when using fires and stoves as accidents can happen and with the ground dry a small fire can spread rapidly.

Just in:

Fed up with those perky midgies and mossies? Then look no further that our midge and mosquito repellent at a rather tasty £7.50 for 100ml bottle. Both Expedition and natural varieties available. For additional protection we have headnets and headnets with built in hats.
